Wind and weed in Germany make for a weekend of varying results for Junior GB Kayakers..


Last weekend saw a GB team comprising of 3 U23 men, 17 junior kayaks and 5 canoes taking part in the annual International Bochum Regatta and the GB athletes kept the supporters cheering all weekend as time after time they tasted success.

The medal haul in the end totalled 18, including 5 in the Elite Junior classes. GB finished 4th of 17 nations behind Germany, Canada, and Czech republic. This included local Hampton Hill Tom Hide of Addlestone Canoe with Ed Rutherford from Weybridge taking 2nd place and a silver medal in the K2 500m. A German crew were first and a Polish crew placed 3rd.

A small elite Junior squad of some 4 boys including Tom Hide have now left for a two week training and acclimatisation period in Hungary prior to the Junior European Regatta in Budapest starting on the 17th July. This event being the pinnacle of the years competition and comes with high hopes of more medal success.
