Tom and Ed are on top of the World..

GB gold medals seem to be a bit of a habit these days and it was no exception for Hampton Hill local boy Tom Hide of Addlestone Canoe Club coming back from the 2008 Canoe Marathon World Championships in Tyn nad Vltavou, Czech Republic with plenty to smile about. Winning gold and being named Junior World Champion in the K2 event over 21.5km with his partner Edward Rutherford of Elmbridge Canoe Club in a time of 1hr 27.48min, from a Belgium crew in 2nd and Hungary 3rd.

In a field of 25 boats from Australia, S. Africa, Canada and all the major European countries, Tom and Ed dominated from the start, with only a slight hiccup at the first portage when Tom slipped and fell but recovered with boat in tact to make no further mistakes.

Having heard the GB National Anthem so many times during the Olympics, they too were heralded and both were delighted at their Gold, putting the final seal on their Junior careers. Tom and Ed are both on the World Class program and identified as potential competitors for the Flatwater Sprint events in London 2012. Both boys now enter the senior program, with a hard winters training ahead to make their mark in the senior ranks next spring.
